The website redesign SEO checklist
How to launch a sharper website without quietly deleting the search visibility you already earned.
Inventory before design
Export the pages that receive traffic, links, enquiries and revenue before the sitemap changes. A redesign that starts with visual references can accidentally remove the pages doing the commercial work.
Map every valuable URL
Keep strong URLs where possible. When a page must move, create one direct permanent redirect to the closest relevant destination. Avoid redirect chains and do not send everything to the homepage.
Carry meaning into the new templates
Preserve useful copy, headings, metadata, internal links and structured data. Improve them deliberately, but do not replace specific information with vague brand language.
Test the launch like a migration
Crawl the preview, verify canonicals and index rules, test forms, check analytics events and monitor search coverage after launch.
- Submit the updated sitemap
- Watch crawl errors
- Check redirected URLs
- Compare organic landing pages
- Measure conversion as well as traffic
